EDDM
Do you own a restaurant, pizza shop, or clothing store? Or are you a tradesperson such as a plumber, handyman, landscaper, electrician, hair dresser or barber? Are you opening a new business owner in your neighborhood or are you an established business looking to attract new customers? Every Door Direct Mail (EDDM) allows you to promote your product, business and/or services easily and cost effectively.
Here’s how it works: pick a zip code or just a couple of postal routes in a zip, design a qualifying mail piece, give us a call and we take care of the rest.
Here’s how it EDDM works:
- Decide on Your Target Area. Let’s say you are opening a sandwich shop and would like to mail to Doylestown residents. There are over 20,000 addresses in Doylestown, so you want to break it down to the areas you want to focus on. Your shop is in the borough so choosing route(s) that are in the borough is a great place to start. Those areas all have postal route numbers assigned to them by the Post Office. Pick routes that best suit your needs get a count of how many addresses in each route(s). You must mail to every address(businesses are optional) on any given route.
- Design a Qualifying Mail Piece. EDDM mail pieces have specific requirements. The piece must be one of the following: more than 10.5” in length OR 6.125” in height OR 0.25” thick. It cannot be more the 15” long, 12” high and 0>75” thick. The minimum thickness is 0.007” which is about the thickness of three sheets of paper. The minimum quantity to mail is 200. Make sure to have the correct indicia and endorsement on your piece too.
- Get Your Pieces Printed. We always recommend having your pieces reviewed prior to printing to make sure that your piece meets all postal regulations for an EDDM mailing. Once reviewed and approved, get them printed. Paper such as 100# gloss cover works well for EDDM requirements. You will have a number to have printed from the route(s) you’ve selected.
- Prepare Your Mail. Your pieces must be bundled with a facing slip in bundles of 50 to 100. You must include the piece count per bundle for instance a route with 538 pieces would be 5 bundles of 100 and one with 38 pieces. Next, fill out a postal statement (3587 or 3602) and deliver your bundled pieces, postage statement and postage to the appropriate post office.
- Professional Mailing Services. If all else fails or you do not that the time or staff, call your local mail service provider to prepare the mailing for you. Promotions By Mail prints and mails many, many EDDM mailings so if you need help in preparing your mailing we can take over the reins.
Some noticeable differences between EDDM mailings and regular bulk mailings:
- EDDM mailings do not have full names and addresses. Typical mail is addressed with name, address, city, state and zip while EDDM mailings may be titled Postal Customer or Residential Customer.
- You must deliver pieces to the corresponding post office. For instance Doylestown route(s) must be delivered to Doylestown while Hilltown route(s) must be delivered to Hilltown.
- You do not need a postal permit to mail EDDM. There are no annual permit fees to mail EDDM whereas bulk mail requires you have a permit at an accepting post office.
- EDDM can be accepted at any post office and you must deliver pieces to the corresponding post office. For instance Doylestown route(s) must be delivered to Doylestown while Hilltown route(s) must be delivered to Hilltown. Bulk mail can only be accepted at Business Mail Entry Units(BMEU.)
- Postage for EDDM is much less than the cost of standard or first class mail.
- No lists are necessary to mail EDDM pieces.
- You must mail to all customers on a selected route(s) however, businesses are optional
- Regular bulk mailings do not have the same size restrictions as an EDDM mailing.
